Would you pick up thirty bucks from the street?

The new year is upon us, and the 2010 tally is in: I found a total of $30.50 to donate to charity last year!

All told, there were 838 pieces of currency weighing 5.4 pounds: 690 pennies, 87 dimes, 33 nickels, 25 quarters, two one dollar bills, and one fiver. Every last bit of it came from the sidewalk, the street, the floors of stores and bars, or from abandoned desks at work. Pretty amazing!

As I've mentioned, I found some freshly-minted pennies in New Orleans this fall, but pretty as they are, I think my favorites are the battered pieces whose lifespans are about to end. The penny at the upper left in this picture is so corroded by road salt, I wasn't even sure at first glance that it WAS a coin.

The 2011 tally has begun: I found two pennies while leaving Pathmark yesterday, and two more at a deli moments later. Anyone else keeping count for 2011?
